IF - Leadership Development

Taking a strategic perspective, we see the accountability of leadership clearly depicted by the Integrated Framework. Fundamentally, the role of leadership is to establish and manage the Climate in their organisation, be that a multi-national conglomerate, a start-up entrepreneurial enterprise, a school, university or hospital. Delivering ‘performance’, i.e. profit or within budget activity, is an outcome to building and sustaining a high-performance Climate. Organisational performance oscillates because leaders take their eye off the ball of managing Climate to concentrate upon ‘managing the numbers’. This is not to suggest leadership is a single-track activity, it is far more complex than that. However, at its very heart lies the responsibility to build and sustain Climate.

To manage Climate, leaders must recognise their acute accountability to manage the three ‘change levers’ that interact to generate the culture of the enterprise. Leaders must ensure their organisation is assembled in an effective manner, such that every role is discrete in terms of not over-lapping with others or leaving gaps that render faults and errors more likely to arise. Leaders must drive efficient and effective processes concerning planning, communication, decision-making, development etc. And, crucially, they must manage their own behaviours so they are viewed as credible and capable. Behaving effectively will drive up Climate more so than knowledge, skills and experience. However, behaviours and skills are not mutually exclusive; both are needed to deliver differentially superior performance.

Our approach to leadership development focuses on helping and supporting leaders to manage this ‘leadership dynamic’. Those that do so effectively create a culture in their organisation that generates a high-performance Climate, which is enduring and so confers a level of sustainable competitive advantage evidenced by stronger performance across whatever metrics constitutes that organisation’s balanced scorecard.
